Nick Concept: by Brad Heitmeyer

Sep 12, 2013   //   by Mark Maia   //   So-Called Living: The Blog  //  No Comments

In a previous post, I mentioned a buddy of mine from back at the start of my video game carrier, Brad Heitmeyer (don’t think I mentioned his name before). Anyway, Brad is the guy putting together some So-Called Living pages for his portfolio.

He sent me the picture you see here, about a week or so ago. It’s his first concept of Nick, one of SCL’s main characters. Brad’s style is a lot more realistic compared to the artists that have tried this in the past. It’s not what I expected, but it’s still a nice piece. I’m interested to see where he goes with the rest of it, and how it fits in with the mood of the SCL world. It could be just the thing SCL needed… or not. Either way, we have a new piece of artwork to enjoy.

Good work Brad, I can’t wait to see more. I do hope this works out ;)

My Top Cow Talent Hunt Submission

Jan 7, 2013   //   by Mark Maia   //   So-Called Living: The Blog  //  No Comments

As you all already know, I submitted a script to the Top Cow Talent Hunt. I’ve posted out-takes from the script in the past, but now I’m posting the script in full, for any of you interested. Keep in mind, these are not my characters. All characters in this story are from the Top Cow universe, as per the rules outlined in the submission guide lines.

So, here it is. I’ve included both the script and synopsis. Enjoy!… I hope.

Synopsis: Bad Blood

Script Submission: Bad Blood

I also had a second submission that’s a lot shorter. Here it is.

Some Art!

Apr 9, 2012   //   by Mark Maia   //   So-Called Living: The Blog  //  No Comments

It’s not much, but it’s all I could pry out of Jamie’s resistant hands. I get he doesn’t want to show to much before it’s released, and that’s a good thing. I probably would have show you the entire book by now if not for him playing the roll of the cooler head, which as we know prevails.

Anyway…. When asked for some art, Jamie replied “I’m sure I can get you something”.  A short while later I received this e-mail…

I would like to introduce you to “Waiting for the bus, Gus” He will be making his debut in the first issue of So-Called Living.  :P

… Thanks Jamie

The Facts

Mar 20, 2012   //   by Mark Maia   //   So-Called Living: The Blog  //  No Comments

Yesterday was suppose to be the day that Jamie read my script for book 2 and I got started on book 3, but neither of those things happened. Not sure what Jamie’s excuse was, but for me… I fell asleep. If you’re a writer, and you’re that tired, go to sleep. I’ve tried to write while sleepy before, and it never works out. I’ll always come back the next day and rewrite any of the gibberish I wrote in that zombie like state, because if you force it, you’r not going to be happy with the results. Speaking of zombies, lets get to today So-Called Living facts

Fact 1: Zombies exist in the world of So-Called Living.

Fact 2: It’s not an outbreak, just an every day nuisance that people have learned to deal with. This isn’t the Apocalypse, this is Tuesday.

…still, just the tip of the iceberg ;)

More Than Only Human

Mar 19, 2012   //   by Mark Maia   //   So-Called Living: The Blog  //  No Comments

So-Called living takes place in a world where anything is possible, and follows the life of Jack, an ordinary guy dealing with everyday problems is a world that is anything but ordinary. From time to time I’ll drop a few facts about the world of So-Called living, to give you an idea of what to expect. It’ll be something like this…

Fact 1: Vampires exist, and live among us (us being the people of So-Called Living, not us “us”).

Fact 2: There are very few vampires in existence, and those that do exist are separated into two types.

Forest Fairies: Your overly emotional, frilly, cloak wearing brand of vampire,  pulled from the pages of an Ann Rice novel.

and

Bulls: Emotionally distant with total disregard for authority, and rough around the edges (your bad ass cool guy).

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, trust me.

Storyboard Pages: 7 & 8

Mar 15, 2012   //   by Mark Maia   //   So-Called Living: The Blog  //  2 Comments

Here are two more story boards for So-Called Living. Here you’ll learn a little more about what’s going on with Jack & Jill. This is also where the story starts to pick up. Not sure how much I can show you guys after these pages, but I’ll leak what I can ;)

Page 7: Set in front of an oversized moon.

Page 8: Looks like our couple gets into a little trouble. I made one request of Jamie on this page, and that was to turn jack around, so it looks more like he’s pulling (almost dragging) Jill away from an awkward situation rather than running for his life.

Storyboard Pages: 5 & 6

Got some more storyboards for you guys. This time around I’m posting the versions with my comments written on them so you guys can follow along, but I’ll also reiterate my notes for those who can’t make out my chicken scratch ;)

Page 5: Starts off with a news report on TV (if you couldn’t make it out). I actually had to black out one of the panels with comments, but trust me they were awesome comments ;)

Page 6: I originally wrote “..catch more bees with honey” but the saying is actually “… catch more flies with honey”. I considered leaving it in there and having Jill correct Jack, but I couldn’t get a good flow that I liked that wouldn’t change up the rest of the page.

In the panel where Jack is throwing out the chilly fries (the panel with the red scribbles over black scribbles) I requested that Jill be in the frame to continue the flow of her walking away without Jack that starts in the panel above (the panel with the black scribble that says “you showed him”.

Storyboard Pages: 3 & 4

Today is an exciting day! Well for me at least ;) We’ve got the entire first issue storyboarded out, and I think Jamie’s done an awesome job! I was worried that it would have come out looking stale and dull because of all the chatter I wrote, but with some dynamic angles and creative framing Jamie did an awesome job of making the book visually appealing. Let’s give the man a hand.

Today I’ve included the two first storyboarded pages (minus cover and credit page) as a sneak peek, and I’ll be uploading more thorough out the week. I’m getting together with Jamie later today to discuss a few edits I’d like to see to some of the other pages. I’ll be sure to upload those pages along with my notes so you guys cans follow along with the process. For the sake of the story, certain portions have been blacked out ;)
